The Game:
Here comes the GAME we’ve all been waiting for. The main goal as to why we follow the greatest sport in the world. I will have to admit Tom Brady WILL move into the Top 5 QB’s of all time if he can win this Sunday. It will also be interesting as to where Eli Manning is ranked, if he can beat Brady twice in the Super Bowl and having more rings then his brother Peyton who at least in my books is in that Top 5 list as the best pure QB’s of all time. Eli, might leap frog both as a more clutch quarterback with a win this Sunday in Indy. But, before I break down anymore I want to explain this sport to those of you who only watch this game once a year or have never watched it before.
What its all about:
Football is the realest form of a chess match excluding actual war. I have studied chess and football, and well they’re just that similar. Each move controls the unit and team. No other sport really has a Defense and Offence that is separate and onto its own. This makes every single player and piece valuable, and every turnover of the ball is similar to the offence and defense in chess. Other sports seem to play more like checkers, “cause and effect.” You do one thing and in transition it could kill you, but then again, you could recover or you have a goalie back there who might be able stop the impending threat. In football anything you do can kill you. You could have everything planned to a T and one slip, one extra burst of energy or broken tackle could cause the momentum shift that could win you the game. The other thing that makes this game so different than other sports is no matter how many pieces’ you have left. You always have the chance to make a comeback, but you must move as a unit. Break down every play, every inch, and every move of every second. One failure from the pond to the King could be your last. It’s interesting how many life lessons can be learned from both of these competitions.
Chess and football both make us think about life and how desperate we have to work, give up of ourselves and love for our team to win or at least be successful. Now when I say love I mean REAL LOVE, not from cupid, a fantasy or passionate love. I MEAN REAL LOVE and sacrifice for family, friends, co-workers and neighbors, not for “I” or “ME”, but for "WE". Both teach us fundamental rules, LIFE RULES and thoughts on HOW TO BECOME A BETTER PERSON AND MORE RESPECTFUL OF OTHERS AROUND US. That drives us as humans to do the RIGHT THING. True enough most sports and games have most of these qualities, but not all of them. I have played other sports, 16 years of basketball, 12 of road hockey, 6 years baseball and a few years of European Football. All fantastic sports but at least in my opinion none have all of these fundamental qualities like football does.
Sure the media and league has made it into a week of money grabbing, sex, drugs and unlawful partying, but that comes with everything that has such a center stage. For this I am not pleased but sadly good always comes with evil, it’s up to us to stop it or stand against it and make sure the children know why we watch, listen and play this game.
Now don’t get me wrong if the NFL was not taking the time to abolish horrendous celebrations, head hits, damage to the O – lines and D lines bodies; dealing with criminal records and recovery from such moronic and usually misguided judgment, I would have no legs to stand on. But they are the league that paving the way for other sports in all areas like safety, work environments, building communities and creating support all around. I hope that things like outrageous parties that lead to crime, prostitution rings and drug usage during these weeks of festivity goes away from the game, but for now just being a fan and loving the sport and match ups of one of the most watched events in the world year after year, is good enough for me.
My breakdown of Super Bowl 46 in Indianapolis:
This game might be more perplexing and stunning than any other game in Super Bowl history. As the (8 – 8) Giants might be the favorite to win this Sunday, against a high powered and hungry (13 – 3) Patriots. The same type situation happened in Super Bowl 43, when the (12 – 4) Steelers went up against the (8 – 8) Cardinals and it ended in football frenzy as the favored Steelers pulled out a win with minutes to go. But like I just said the Steelers were the favorites in that game. This game could unfold the same way.
This game may come down to the Fearsome Front Four of the Giants, trying to take down Brady and his Fabulous Front Five. Yes Brady is an artist moving down the field, but when pushed out of the pocket there is no telling how he will release the ball or if he can be Mr. Prime Time, like back when he first filled in for Drew Bledsoe. Tom has amazing weapons, led by his un-guardable tight end Rob Gronkowski the best pure tight end in the league. Tom also has his old friend Deion Branch who has been with him through glories and defeats and will pose as a real time threat to the Giants secondary. The running game seems to be the only issue the Pats have, and if they don’t get that motor running right away, it will be “GO TIME” for Justin Tuck and Osi Umenyiora of the Giants. Not to forget the crazy random Blitzers from Perry Fewell the defensive coordinator has coming from all over the field. This also will allow up to 6 or 7 men in coverage with an extra float to cover Branch and Gronkowski. Having the luxury of 6 or 7 guys back in a type of prevent defense or stifling coverage could prove too much for New England. The only hope is that Tom’s greatest weapon over the years and maybe the best slot receiver in the league can break free and buy Brady some time. If Brady can get the ball out to Wes Welker or get the running game going, it will be a shootout that the Patriots will probably win. However, I wouldn’t count out the Giants and the other contender for best slot receiver in the league.
It’s true that the Patriots have the best pound for pound offense in the NFL, but all his life Eli has had receivers that dropped the ball. This time he is dealing with three that have sure hands, against a Defense that has not really done anything impressive all season, and if anything, has looked rattled. Tom Coughlin has taught his team virtue and resiliency and his work ethic year after year has put them in a position to win again. He is the main reason why they’re here, because he trusts his players and allows them to be themselves with a strong fatherly presence on the whole team. The running game of the Giants has been flat out garbage, but Earth and Fire are still together and if they have any life left in them this game will be over fast. Bradshaw and Jacobs have the potential to free up the best 3 wideout core in football, with a never say never quarterback all they have to do is gain a few yards and NOT fumble. If they do that then Hakeem Nicks and Mario Manningham will have a field day with the pass action play, and it will free up Victor Cruz to run amuck on the Patriots in the middle of the field. Now before Giants fans get all happy and lethargic, you must understand you are going up against one of the smartest men in football. Bill Belichick is still a genius. He just doesn’t lose when it comes to his coaching. Bill just gets how people play and uses that against you. His coaching will be the deciding factor in this game.
The Patriots had the best team in the AFC, they demolished the NFL’s new adopted son in Tim Tebow and the Broncos, and then won a hard fought game against a hungry Ravens team. The Patriots though have not been really challanged in the past 7 weeks, and the game they barely won was because of well let’s just say “WIDE LEFT.” On the flip side remember the Giants smashed a really good Falcons team, knocked over the Packers the best overall team with the best overall QB in the league and then marched into San Fran and tore open the third best defense with and beat up Frank Gore. All great games are won by the team with the most momentum and when they get hot; and the Giants are RED HOT.
Keys of the game:
Patriots:
They need to run the ball and get it out of Brady’s hands fast.
They cannot allow the Giants to get the lead with an untested Defense.
They need to trust their leader Bill Belichick and Tom Brady who have been the best winners together of all time.
Giants:
They need to get to Tom Brady, if you do that, the cart will fall apart.
They need to run the ball with some success and the 3 headed receiver monster will be unleashed.
The need to trust Eli Manning and his ability to win the game, he has the guts to do the impossible.
Final Pick:
This game will be tight and my heart will be racing the whole time, even hours after the outcome I will still be in shock as to how this game turns out. I think the Patriots will get out there and Bill will have the Giants number in the beginning, but as the game wears on, the strength, work ethic and integrity of Tom Coughlin’s Giants will shine through and that will lead them to a 28 – 23 victory, Manning with the final drive winner.
Thanks for reading.
THE 46th NFL SUPERBOWL from Indianapolis
NFL Schedule Conference Finals: Sunday January 22nd 2012
The Saints aren't marching in but the 49er’s are, the Giants beat up the Pack, the Ravens barely flew by the clutches of Houston and Tebow time was no match for Tom Terrific. Last week in my picks I allowed my fairytale feelings to get the better of me. I thought that that defense could really tie down the Pats, but I was wrong. The Pats have a really strong dingy offense and well the old theory will be tested against one or two of the only 3 teams left in the dance. It is classic defense that is dominating the post season again. However the only team that can make points with their turn overs is the Giants. Imagine a Giants and Patriots Super Bowl again. The stage is set for basically the same storyline. The Giants squeezing in, the Patriots leading the AFC, what a game that would be. Now on the flip side to that storyline imagine the two Hardball brothers getting a chance to play for the prize. The mental games, the psychology behind a game like that would be the greatest chess match the sport has ever seen.
S @ 3:00pm New York vs. San Francisco – There is no question that the 49ers are an amazing team, they have heart, they can stop the run and the pass. They are built to keep a small lead and well they straight up surprised the football world by going toe to toe offensively with probably the best overall offensive team in the league, scoring points at will. However on Sunday they will not be facing a team that is with a poor and scattered Defense. This is probably the team with the hottest D line in football, they will hit Smith fast and hard and if Gore can’t run the ball Eli will have some amazing opportunities to make some big quick scores. That will then lead to the front 4 of the Giants to pin their ears back and really get after the QB as the other 7 float back into coverage. This game could be a nail biter or could be over in the first half. It will be interesting to see the way these two equally oiled machines going toe to toe with each other. But I still have to go with the Giants they are just hot at the right time. G MEN over the 49ERS 31 - 27.
S @ 6:30 Baltimore vs. New England – What needs to be said about this rivalry if you like football you know that the Ravens and Pat’s don’t like each other, AT ALL. This is the Offense and Defense that has more or less ruled the AFC for the past decade, and now maybe in their final real bout as real contender’s winner takes all. It is a better offense vs. an almost as good defense on one side and on the other a terrible defense against a solid offense. The game has its match up but it will come down to this. Brady will be up against the team that knows him the best, with veterans who have beaten him time and time again. He has a dazzling offense and this will give them the lead once or twice in the game. But, Ray Lewis, Suggs and Reed will be waiting for the first mistake Brady makes and then it’s all about time management. There is no better versatile back in the, Ray Rice will have a field day on the front 7 in the box and if he doesn’t Flacco makes good throws all the time. Against the overall number one defense in the league until Schaud got hurt, the Texans had the fire power to dominate any team and Yates did a great job and still Flacco came up with the big throws when they needed it. I have to lean with the Ravens in this one. They have both sides of the ball covered and they’re going to keep the whole Pat’s team honest on the offensive side of things. The Bird’s win 31 – 28, Ray Lewis gets the defining pick of his career.
Whoever makes it to the Super Bowl right now is playing HOT FOOTBALL right now. It will be awesome to see anyone come through, but right now I am going to say Ravens and Giants for Super Bowl 46!

GAME OF THE WEEK:
S @ 4:05pm New England vs. Denver – This is the biggest media game of the regular season. Forget who is making the playoffs or rivalries. It’s all about, football’s hero of the last decade vs. the unflappable winner of this early decade. Now let’s get things into perspective. Aside from a streak of 5 games, Tim Tebow has not taken this team anywhere, he is no Tom Brady with three Super-Bowls and a few MVP’s… or is he? Let’s look at some things. Brady came into a situation where let’s face it Drew Bledsoe was probably going to take them to the Super-Bowl anyway, but Brady was clutch he made every throw and won the biggest game of his career, against the greatest show on turf. Now the next two Super-Bowls he had an amazing Defense that was ripping up the league and Brady made excellent throws and got the ball where it always needed to be. However then when he got hurt Matt Cassel was able to go 11 and 5, people started to scratch their head, how good is Brady if he back up can take us to the playoffs. So I wonder even with the 18 – 1 push, (with a nasty overpaid and explosive offense) was it about Brady’s amazingness or was it his ability to shine through in the big moments. Now I know this sounds crazy, but keep reading. Tebow has an amazing secondary and some fresh blood in the front 7 including VANDEN BOSCH that keeps him in games until they give him great field position and he can start to work his TEBOW TIME MIRACLES. Does that not remind you of the secondary in New England, TED BRUSHKI and the front 7 in Pats town in the early 2000’s. I found the whole thing to be interesting at least. Now I am not comparing talent, because they’re 100 percent different quarterbacks. I am comparing their team’s ability to get them in the position to win. I leave you with this point. Tebow made 4 completions up until the 4th quarter last week. Is that because he couldn’t hit his targets or because he threw the ball away and realized his defense could stand up and stop the offense for him with a deep punt, instead of a short field with a fumble or interception. That sounds like something Brady would do. My heart tells me Tebow time is rising, and Brady mania is coming to an end with NO REAL Defense in New England. No matter if you agree or not it will be a very interest game that will have the nation watching and will have people choosing whether to love the new kid or the old guy. Denver 23 – 21 at home over the Patriots.

AFC game of the week:
S @ 1:00pm Houston at Cincinnati – This game is massive to both teams. The Bengals are desperately hanging on to their playoff hopes as other teams creep up behind them. On the other side you have the red hot Texans who have a glimpse of hope with a young QB, the number one defense and a great running game, but have to weather the storms and get a bye week in the playoffs to give their team a chance to get their team to the Super Bowl. The Bengals are still hot with their offensive rookies and will be tested against an amazing Defense that is stout at stopping the run and pass. However the game does not hinge on this. It is about if the Texans offense can stay on the field. If they can keep using their pass action, based off a great running day by Foster and Tate while using the reworked offense that again will be playing without Andre Johnson, the Houston Defense will be licking their chops ready for a chance at the rookie. But if Cincinnati can stop them even a few times at the beginning it may get this Texans Defense to slow down just enough to get them tired in the fourth quarter and Dalton can make his push for the victory. I just don’t believe that they can do it though, I think the Bengals will make the playoffs but not because of this game. Houston 24 – 21 over the still young, but impressive Bengals.
NFC game of the week:
S @ 8:30pm NY Giants at Dallas – Tick tock goes the clock with both teams, their quarterbacks and coaches. Sure Manning has thrown a lot of on target balls and the receivers have dropped them or tipped the ball and have cost the Giants the playoffs last year and maybe this year. Sure Romo plays excellent football and someone fumbles near the goal line, a kicker misses a chip shot or the defense lets him down. Sure both coaches have watched from the sidelines and made some great calls, but all of these players’ coaches on both teams just can’t finish games properly in 2011. It comes down to the play by play in the game and who governs that, the coaches. Garrett has done some great things, but can’t get them deep into the playoffs, and Coughlin has won a Super Bowl, but that is in times past and last week the coaches made huge mistakes. Coughlin made two terrible challenges that cost him timeouts and maybe the game, while Garrett ices his own kicker when he makes the game winning field goal. This leads us to believe that if one of these teams doesn’t make the playoffs the coaches and maybe the quarterbacks will be moving. So this is a playoff game for both teams right here. If the Giants win they are tied with the Cowboys with 3 games left. If the Cowboys win they create separation and win the division with the tie breaker. The choice is up to each player, but ultimately it comes down to the coaches and QB’s, and with both beginning terrible in December I have to go with age over beauty and give it to the Giants in a close game on Sunday Night Football. Giants 30 – Cowboys 28.
Other Scores:

FANTASY Player Picks:
Fantasy stud of the week will be Marshawn Lynch against a very weak, tired and awful St. Louis run defense at home.
Fantasy duds of the week will be Chris Johnson who has finally hit his stride but against weak teams. New Orleans will be putting 8 in the box and make Hasselback beat them through the air.

AFC game of the week:
S @ 1:00pm Cincinnati at Pittsburgh – One team that keeps surprising from week to week is the Cincinnati Bengals. The Defense was not going to be a shock as they are stout all throughout the from 7 and back 4. But to pose such a good record there has to be a tipping point. No person touches the ball more than the QB’s in the game, he is the man that controls if his team can move the ball or not, based off his perception of the defense and the play called moment by moment. Cincinnati has received that and more from their Rookie Andy Dalton. Dalton is acting like a true professional. He is spreading the ball around and doesn’t create turnovers. This is key. The Bengals Defense can sit down and rest, this is why they are winning games. Now they are playing no push over by any means in the Steelers, but there has been decline in the performances this year. It just seems that they don’t have the strength they used to. The game comes down to this one thing in the AFC North juggernaut division; can they get Cedric Benson going again? If they can then the Bengals win this week hands down. But even though the Steelers keep standing up and tumbling down, they are still not knocked out and being at home will give them the ultimate ability to keep their winning habits in 2011. Bengals 21 – Steelers 24.
NFC game of the week:
S @ 8:30pm Detroit at New Orleans – The bad boys vs. the offensive boys, these two teams are moving in two different directions. One team wants beat every team to a pulp and hurt anyone they can find. The other mathematically and periodically destroys your defense and demoralizes and offence. The lions have all the tools needed to be an elite team, but they need time and composure. They have neither right now. Stafford cannot get the ball to Calvin and has to share the ball, but you need to get it to the most explosive player in the game. The Defense runs off the front four and them alone, this will pose a massive problem against the number one offense in the league. No quarterback has ever played the way Brees has in NFL history and is on pace for the second time in 3 years to break Dan Marino’s single season yards thrown total. He is unstoppable. The thing is he probably would have continued at his normal pace without Endomican Suh who is the leader of the bullies in Detroit. But with him gone now we might see a game where Brees breaks out and throws to everyone. The secondary seems confused and is allowing massive amounts of yards and points. Without the normal pressure and more contact on Von, the Lions are going to get a hurting from an offence that might only be to be stopped by the Ravens or the 49ers. Saints beat up the Lions 49 – 25.
Other Scores:
T @ 8:20pm Philadelphia 26 - Seattle 22

FANTASY Player Picks:
Fantasy stud of the week will be Tom Brady will love to have a chance to destroy the Colts after all the pain and greatness that has been had against the Colts.
Fantasy duds of the week will be Houston Defense Atlanta is picking up speed and without a good QB Houston could be toast on the Defensive side of things.
